SPLINTS & CASTS FOR THE THUMB, FINGER, HAND, WRIST & FOREARM INJURIES

CUSTOM-THERMOPLASTIC ORTHOSES & SPORTS GUARDS

WHAT ARE THERMOPLASTIC SPLINTS?

Thermoplastic is a versatile, lightweight, and water-resistant material that can be moulded to accomodate specific needs. Research indicates that the use of thermoplastic splints and braces can significantly improve functionality in a shorter time period (Quadlbauer et al., 2016).
Thermoplastic sports guards and splints enable patients to resume sports activities more quickly compared to traditional heavy plaster casts. Thermoplastic splints allow patients to carry out daily tasks including showering or swimming without the hassle of keeping the splint dry.

HOW THERMOPLASTIC SPLINTS WORKS

Thermoplastic is a flat sheet of polymer resin that softens and becomes flexible at specific temperatures, solidifying as it cools. It can then be shaped and moulded to fit the required area. If the shape of the limb changes, the thermoplastic splint can easily be removed and reshaped. Additionally, adjustments can be made for looser or tighter fits in response to changes in edema levels, accomodating swelling or size reduction in the treated area.
It is important to seek medical attention if you have any of the common hand injuries. Prompt evaluation and treatment can help to prevent complications and promote healing.
At The Hands Physio, our Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists have extensive knowledge and experience in assessing, diagnosing, treating, and managing your hand and upper extremity – your shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand – injuries or conditions, so you know you’re in good hands.

PLASTER OF PARIS (POP) CASTS

Paster of Paris (POP) casts often come to mind when you experience a break or fracture, but they are not your only choice. Although POP casts serve their best purpose, our thermoplastic technology provides enhanced advantages and flexibility for patients.
At The Hands Physio, We have created our own custom splints and braces, allowing us to tailor the fit specifically to your injury for optimal support. By utilising our lightweight and water-resistant thermoplastic splint instead of a traditional plaster cast, you will find daily activities more manageable during your recovery.
