What is a Hand Therapist and why would I need one?
Our therapists have dedicated themselves to specializing in hand therapy after completing their undergraduate degrees in Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy, which often involves six years of education. We have all chosen to focus on this specific area of practice, and our decision brings direct benefits to our patients. Our team is composed of passionate and hardworking professionals, committed to achieving excellence. The effort we invest in developing our extensive knowledge and skills in hand therapy is reflected in the care we provide. Each patient and their symptoms are treated as unique challenges. If you are dealing with a shoulder, elbow, sprained wrist, or hand injury, we invite you to schedule an appointment with Action Rehab The Hands Physio.
I just need an orthotic/splint/brace. Do I need to make an appointment?
Yes! Every brace we provide is uniquely crafted by our skilled team of hand therapists. To effectively address your condition, our therapists will conduct a formal assessment during your consultation. They will offer you educational resources and exercises to support your recovery. Following the initial splinting phase, we will maintain your care to help you rebuild your strength and improve your range of motion through targeted exercises.
I’ve only just had surgery. Isn’t it too early to start rehabilitation?
Hand Therapists typically see patients within the first three days after surgery to create orthotics, splints, or braces and to remove bulky post-surgery dressings. At the beginning of rehabilitation, the emphasis is on reducing swelling, fitting these splints, and ensuring that unaffected joints remain mobile. Our Hand Therapists are also skilled in basic wound care and can remove your stitches if directed by your Doctor!
I’ve got an appointment with my surgeon in 2 weeks. Why do I need to see you before then?
Generally once the surgery has been done our therapists will manage your care. Following the advice of the surgeon we will remove your dressings, protect you in a splint and get you moving. Over the next few weeks we will strengthen you and return you to your activities of daily living. During this time we liaise closely with your surgeon keeping them informed of your care. It is important you see your therapist regularly for this and so often appointments with your therapist will happen much more frequently than your surgical appointments.
Why wouldn’t I just go to my local Physiotherapist? Why come to Action Rehab instead?
At Action Rehab, our therapists focus on the treatment of shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand injuries, bringing over 20 years of experience in supporting individuals with upper limb conditions. Our dedicated team of Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists exclusively focuses on these areas. We engage in ongoing training for upper limb management, and our expertise is detailed on our About Us page. We maintain strong collaborations with local Physiotherapists, Chiropractors, and Osteopaths, many of whom refer clients to us for hand injuries. If you would like us to reach out to your local therapist, please let us know. It may also be beneficial to ask your local therapist if a referral to Action Rehab could enhance your recovery. Remember, when it comes to your shoulder, elbow, wrist, or hand, your outcome is our passion!
How long are the consultations?
Initial consultations are scheduled for 30 to 40 minutes, depending on the complexity of your injury. Follow-up appointments are also set for 30 to 40 minutes, ensuring that your time is never rushed if you need more. The frequency of your reviews will be determined by the intricacy and severity of your injury, as well as your progress.
