WHAT IS GOLFER'S ELBOW?

Golfer’s elbow results from overuse of the muscles that bend the wrist or by repetitively bending and straightening the elbow. It’s usually described by pain from the elbow to the wrist on the inside (medial side) of the elbow. The pain is traditionally caused by damage to the tendons that bend the wrist toward the palm.

GOLFER'S ELBOW SYMPTOMS

Golfer’s elbow often produces pain on the inside (medial epicondyle) of the elbow. The elbow may feel stiff. Hands and wrists may feel weak, you may also feel numbness in the arm and hand.

GOLFER'S ELBOW TREATMENT

At Action Rehab, your hand therapist, Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist  may recommend a number of the following treatments that may include a combination following:
Activity Modification: Limit use and rest the arm while you sleep by restricting the bending that causes compression of the nerve at the elbow.  When there are tears of the tendon at the elbow the ulnar nerve can become upset and painful and this rest helps prevent worsening symptoms.
Core Strengthening: Our team of hand therapists, Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists are experienced in designing a strengthening program that restores your stability and increases your strength.  This is so helpful not only for helping alleviate your symptoms but improving your gold game into the future. Your hand therapist, Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist will prescribe a series of exercises for strengthening and stretching exercises to the forearm once your symptoms have decreased.
Conservative Approach
At Action Rehab our team of hand therapists, Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists are experienced in the assessment and treatment of Golfers Elbow and we will tailor a core stability and strengthening program specific to your injury.
See below the two treatment approaches for a patient who has golfer’s elbow.

Fig 1: Basic Treatment

Traditionally patients might try a “Tennis Elbow Strap” to try to treat their “Golfers Elbow” symptoms but this will often compress the painful nerve and also weaken the core stabilisers in the forearm and elbow.

Fig 2: Action Rehab Treatment

At Action Rehab your hand therapist, Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist will prescribe you a strengthening and stabilisation program that helps to decrease the pressure on the nerve at the elbow and restore that stability of the medial elbow muscles so you can return to sport or activity with improved symptoms.

GOLFER'S ELBOW FAQS

How common is a golfer's elbow?

Golfer’s Elbow is a common sports related injury.  The hand therapists, Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists at  Action Rehab are experts in sports trauma.

Golfer’s Elbow is caused by repetitive bending and straightening of the elbow or by a force on the medial side of the elbow where the tendons that bend your wrist and fingers originate.

Golfer’s Elbow takes about 6-8 weeks to recover but depending on how long you may have had the symptoms for before seeking treatment.  The longer you leave it before getting appropriate care then it  may take longer to recover.

No generally Golfer’s Elbow does not require surgery. Action Rehab therapists can assess the X-ray and can advise if your Golfer’s Elbow injury needs surgery.

Golfer’s Elbow can be a serious injury. You should always see a Hand Therapist if you have a Golfer’s Elbow injury because they are much more complicated than you think.

It is difficult for Golfers Elbow to just go away.  When you have the injury then the nerve can become impacted and this can lead to further complications in the fingers and the wrist if left untreated.
