Distal Radius Fracture
- By Jane Liu
Have you recently experienced a fall or sudden impact to your wrist? You might be dealing with a Distal Radius Fracture.
A distal radius fracture is one of the most common wrist injuries, often occurring after a fall onto an outstretched hand (FOOSH). This type of fracture can affect anyone, from athletes to older adults, and it’s important to recognize the symptoms early for proper treatment.
Common Symptoms of a Distal Radius Fracture:
- Pain & Tenderness: A sharp pain at the wrist, especially when moving or pressing on the area.
- Swelling & Bruising: Swelling around the wrist joint, which can also lead to bruising.
- Limited Mobility: Difficulty moving your wrist, often making it challenging to perform everyday tasks.
- Deformity: A noticeable change in the shape of the wrist or a “bump” if the fracture is displaced.
- Numbness or Tingling: In some cases, nerve damage can cause sensations of tingling or numbness in the fingers.
Risk Factors for a Distal Radius Fracture:
While anyone can experience a distal radius fracture, certain factors can increase your risk:
- Age: Older adults, particularly those over 60, are more prone to falls and weaker bones, making fractures more likely.
- Gender: Women, particularly after menopause, are at a higher risk due to decreased bone density.
- Physical Activity: High-impact sports or jobs that involve repetitive stress on the wrists can increase the chance of injury.
- Bone Health: Conditions like osteoporosis or other bone-weakening diseases make fractures more common.
