WHAT ARE CHILDREN'S HAND INJURIES?

At Action Rehab The Hands Physio, we focus on addressing a diverse range of common pediatric conditions, including distal radius fractures (broken wrists), finger fractures, and elbow and finger dislocations.

Hand injuries among children are frequent and often result from trauma. Typical causes of these injuries include sports activities, falls from jungle gym equipment, skateboards, and bicycles, among others.

Since children are still in their developmental stages, it is crucial to assess and treat upper limb fractures promptly. This ensures that the growth plates remain unaffected and helps prevent any long-term or permanent damage.

COMMON HAND INJURIES IN CHILDREN THAT WE TREAT

Distal Radial Fractures

Also known as Colles’ or Smith’s fracture traumatically and is associated with shortening of the radius and malalignment of the wrist.

Finger Dislocation - Volar Plate

This occurs when the joint in the finger is hyperextended (bent backwards) causing the volar plate ligament to tear. It’s important that you seek treatment right away as Volar Plate Injury can cause significant mobility issues and require surgical intervention if not addressed in a timely manner.

Sprained or Fractured Fingers

Finger Fractures are a common injury that can occur due to a direct hit or trauma. These injuries can cause intense and persistent pain which, if left untreated, can potentially lead to long-lasting damage. Also known as sprained finger, finger fractures treatment will depend on the location and type of fracture or sprain sustained.

Dislocated Elbow

This occurs when the bones that make up the elbow joint are forced out of alignment – typically when you land on an outstretched hand during a fall. The elbow is the most commonly dislocated joint in children.
