CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME

In most cases Carpal Tunnel can be treated with us here at Action Rehab with nonsurgical therapy. Our therapists will work with you to create a custom thermoplastic waterproof orthosis that will hold your wrist still and can relieve some symptoms. In some cases surgery may be the best option if your symptoms do not respond to other treatments.
Caught early, carpal tunnel syndrome can be managed to make sure it does not esclate. Some simple tips that you can do at home if you feel some of the symptoms of Carpal tunnel include:
  • Take frequent breaks to rest your hands, if you are typing, etc.
  • Avoid any activities that increase your pain or make it worse.
  • Apply cold packs, this will help with inflammation and swelling.
The rehabilitation program will look to prevent post-surgery joint stiffness, promote muscle mobility and maximise the movement and capability of your hand.
Before the surgery, we make sure you know what you can expect from it. After the surgery, we prepare and then implement your hand rehabilitation program, which can include:

  • Orthotics/Bracing/Splinting
  • Massage
  • Joint Protection
  • Education
  • Strengthening
Aims of post-surgical rehabilitation from carpal tunnel
  • To maximise your hand function
  • To prevent sensitivity and joint stiffness following surgery
  • To learn tendon gliding exercises to prevent the tendons from sticking to the scar
  • To facilitate scar mobility and normal palm function
  • To promote muscle mobility

Fig 1: Basic Treatment

A pharmacy splint or “metal bar splint” is often prescribed for Carpal Tunnel syndrome.  This is not custom made and allows a lot of wrist motion.

Fig 2: Action Rehab Treatment

A custom, light weight, waterproof night brace fabricated by your Hand Therapist at Action Rehab will prevent wrist movement while you sleep and reduce pressure on your carpal tunnel.

CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME FAQS

How common is carpal tunnel syndrome?

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is one of the most common conditions seen by our Hand Therapists at Action Rehab. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is commonly mis diagnosed and so a thorough assessment from a Hand Therapist at Action Rehab is really important.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a repetitive trauma and compression of the median nerve in the wrist.  This can be caused by lifting, typing or repetitive bending and straightening of the fingers and thumb.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can take a long time to heal.  Early assessment and treatment will limit the time taken for the symptoms to settle so seeing your Hand Therapist as soon as possible will help limit your functional difficulties and get you back to work, sport and life more quickly.

No generally Carpal Tunnel Syndrome does not require surgery.  Carpal Tunnel can be treated without surgery if it is assessed and treated early. Action Rehab therapists can assess your Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and can advise if your Carpal Tunnel Syndrome needs surgery.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can be a serious condition. You should always see a Hand Therapist if you have a Carpal Tunnel Syndrome because they are much more complicated than you think.

No it will not go away. It may get worse. Damage to the median nerve in the wrist can be functionally limiting so try not to ignore your symptoms and seek assessment from your Hand Therapist at Action Rehab as soon as you can.
